Finding anything gluten free in Tangier in Morocco can be a true challenge. It can be hard to explain if you do not speak French, and other than the no-no couscous it can be hard to distinguish if something is gluten free or not. In such cases, it is safest to go for food options with fresh ingredients, and you find this at Salon Bleu.

Name: Salon Bleu

Tips: There restaurant has a nice rooftop worth checking out. Also, there is no alcoholic beverage served, for this you have to go to their “hidden” sister establishment.
Gluten free or not gluten free observations:
Item(s) ordered: Fish without the accompanying couscous
GF observation: The staff did not know much about gluten, but I also did not try very hard to explain (as I was just happy to find a place that had a menu with a safe option). I chose the item on the menu (which has limited options in general) that had grilled fish with vegetables, and informed that I did not wish the couscous. The meal was good and no issues at all. I did get one vegetable part on my plate that seemed like it could possibly have been cooked in soy sauce, so I avoided eating this one.
Overall comment: Although there was no allergy marking nor any assurances about the gluten free nature of the dish I ordered, I felt safe that it was indeed gluten fee as the staff shared what the dish consisted of. Just separate or exclude the couscous and double check the way the vegetables are prepared. It may not be the best option as a Celiac, but I personally found very few reliable options in the port area and consider this restaurant a little gem.
