Gluten Free in Bangkok: Massilia

Date

Massilia is one of the very few restaurants in Bangkok where they fully understand what gluten is and will make sure there is no cross contamination. I had read on blogs and reviews that it is THE spot for gluten free pizza in Bangkok.

With that said, it was with disappointment I went there as they have a gluten free pizza menu that they told me I should not order from because they could not guarantee that the pizza toppings were gluten free (only the pizza dough). To me, this seems a little pointless and was the reason I traveled to the restaurant in the first place.

Details of Establishment:

Name: Massilia
Type
:  Italian restaurant
Location15/1 Soi Ruam Ruedi, Khwaeng Lumphini, Bangkok
Nearest BTS: Phloen Chit
Tips Apparently the gluten free pizza cannot be guaranteed gluten free.

Gluten free or not gluten free observations:

Item(s) ordered: Gluten free tomato spaghetti
GF observation: There is a separate page on the menu for gluten free pizza, in addition to a note that all of the pizzas can be made gluten free for B100 extra. They can also make gluten free pasta. With that said, I ordered a gluten free pizza and was told after a few minutes that if I have a gluten allergy they could not guarantee the toppings on any of the pizzas were gluten free. It was suggested that I get pasta instead, but then only with the simplest ingredients to ensure it was Celiac friendly.

Celiac safety: They do their best to ensure that you order what is safe for you, which makes you feel you are in good hands. But, they cannot guarantee that any of the gluten free dishes are in fact fully gluten free. You can still go here and order gluten free pasta, but it will be a mediocre and expensive experience as you will get a bare minimum of ingredients.

Overall comment: This is a very nice (and very expensive) restaurant. Staff is polite and knowledgeable. I appreciate that they take allergies seriously and that they informed me along the way that food would not be Celiac friendly. I am not sure if they say that they cannot guarantee gluten free toppings to be on the safe side, but it should not be too hard for a restaurant to figure out the ingredients of their own dishes.

Disclaimer: The above is based on the personal experience and opinion of a Celiac traveler. For eating places, you should still inquire about the gluten free options and ingredients as recipes, kitchen routines, staff and management may have changed. Only places marked “100% Celiac safe” are confirmed free from cross contamination. This post is not sponsored.
