Gluten Free in Arendal: Baker Jørgensen

Date
Oct, 23, 2019

This is a bakery in Arendal with a long history (dating back to 1904). Personally, I have fond memories of sharing some delicious “Napoleonskake” with my grandmother when I was a child. To my despair, as I became a Celiac, I could no longer eat my favorite cake. Just recently I learned, however, that they now serve a gluten free version of the cake every Wednesday. Not only that, but they also have gluten free chocolate and cream cake (“bløtkake”), bread buns (“rundstykker” and “horn”), bread and “purke”. It is a great place to try some local bakery treats, even as a Celiac.

Details of Establishment:

Name: Baker Jørgensen
Type
:  Bakery / Cafè
Location: Several locations, with the best one being at Torvet (downtown)
Tips: They have gluten free Napoleon cake only every Wednesday.

Gluten free or not gluten free observations:

Item(s) ordered: Napoleon cake, horn, bløtkake / cream cake
GF observation: The gluten free products are kept separate and there are proper routines for handing gluten free products (there is even plastic covering the cake slices).

Celiac safety: This is not a 100% gluten free establishment, but cross contamination is taken seriously. You can read more here . Note that neither I nor my family members have ever had any reaction from eating at this establishment (we are all Celiacs).

Overall comment: Looking for something gluten free in Arendal? Look no further. Baker Jørgensen has a lot to choose between, especially on Wednesdays.

Disclaimer: The above is based on the personal experience and opinion of a Celiac traveler. For eating places, you should still inquire about the gluten free options and ingredients as recipes, kitchen routines, staff and management may have changed. Only places marked “100% Celiac safe” are confirmed free from cross contamination. This post is not sponsored.
