Gluten Free in Funchal: Pestana Carlton Madeira

Date
Jan, 13, 2021

Pestana Carlton Madeira has three different restaurants, but during lock down only one will be open. If you happen to be a guest there, you may be better off eating somewhere else if you are Celiac as it is a buffet only restaurant. If you are only choosing to eat gluten free as a dietary preference, you will be okay.

Experience and review:

      • Item(s) ordered: Buffet with special dessert made for me
      • Gluten free observations: I was not aware of this, but this is a buffet only restaurant. As there were no other options at the time, I did eat there. The staff member who greeted me said he would talk with the chef to check what items were safe and that he would guide me through the buffet section to explain. After two follow-ups, another staff member came about 15 minutes later and let me know what was safe. She said that the chef would make a separate dessert for me, as he was worried about cross contamination, which was a nice gesture.
      • Celiac safety: This establishment only serves buffet, which is very unsafe for Celiacs. In addition, due to COVID-19, everyone uses their own set of serving utensils. This means that everyone will be using the same utensils for all the dishes, making it even more unsafe for a Celiac. Even though the staff and kitchen were good at letting me know what was originally gluten free, the cross contamination risk is too high for me to recommend it to Celiacs.
Disclaimer: The above is based on the personal experience and opinion of a Celiac traveler. For eating places, you should still inquire about the gluten free options and ingredients as recipes, kitchen routines, staff and management may have changed. Only places marked “100% Celiac safe” are confirmed free from cross contamination. This post is not sponsored.
