Queen of Curry seems to be a popular place among tourists for curry in Bangkok, and it is understandable why. It is one of very few Thai restaurants I have come across where someone in the staff speaks very good English – and they even serve wine. This restaurant has an extensive menu of Thai dishes, but you can expect that the dishes are “dulled down” for Western pallets. Also, note that while Indian curries are more or less gluten free by default, Thai curries are not.
Details of Establishment:
Name: Queen of Curry
Type: Restaurant
Location: 49 Charoenkrung Road, Soi 50 | Soi 50 Bongrak, Bangkok 10500, Thailand
Tips: If you like your dishes spicy, you need to specify this. Even medium was extremely mild.
Gluten free or not gluten free observations:
Item(s) ordered: Panang curry | Tom Yum soup | Steamed rice | Sticky rice with mango
GF observation: No allergen markings on the menu. You depend on the staff really understanding you when you ask about ingredients. One staff member knew English very well and could translate to the waiter. However, I got a dish that clearly was not the one I ordered, yet it was without the sauces I asked to be removed. So either the waiter misunderstood my dish or they changed it to fit my dietary restrictions. Probably the former.
Overall comment: It it not the best Thai meal I have had and you can hardly taste any spices at all. Yet, I did get a safe meal. So if you really want to feel safe when ordering and have had issues with restaurants elsewhere not understanding your needs, this could be a possible alternative. Just check before you sit down that an English speaking staff is present.
