Gluten Free in Rome: Giolitti

Date
Apr, 10, 2019

Eating gelato is a must when visiting Rome, and you will not have a hard time finding a place selling it. What is difficult, though, is figuring out which places are the best ones. Giolitti is a gelato place that has a line that goes through the shop and out into the street. It is that popular (with over 10.000 reviews on TripAdvisor) – and for a very good reason!

Details of Establishment:

Name: Giolitti
Type
:  Gelato
Location: Via degli Uffici del Vicario, 40, 00186 Roma, Italy
Tips: To skip the line, take a seat by a table. It costs slightly more, but you do not have to queue.

Gluten free or not gluten free observations:

Item(s) ordered: Ice cream in two flavors and whipped cream
GF observation: The menu is not allergen marked and you need to ask the very stressed out and busy waiter. The waiter confirmed  selected flavors were gluten free. When I got the ice cream, they had also made sure there was no cracker in it as the waiter said “sorry, not safe for you”.

Celiac safety: This is not a 100% gluten free establishment. With ice cream, there is a particular risk of cross contamination due to the scooping process, so make sure to inform the staff you have Celiac disease.

Overall comment: It is popular for a good reason – the ice cream is delicious. Really worth a try, just make sure the staff is informed if you are Celiac.

Disclaimer: The above is based on the personal experience and opinion of a Celiac traveler. For eating places, you should still inquire about the gluten free options and ingredients as recipes, kitchen routines, staff and management may have changed. Only places marked “100% Celiac safe” are confirmed free from cross contamination. This post is not sponsored.
