Portugal is a country of many spectacular places. Lisbon is a city you easily can fall in love with. Porto has its own charm, while the south is known for splendid beaches. There is much more to Portugal, though, and Peniche is one of those places you may never consider heading to. It is known for sardines, amazing sangria, long beaches and superb surfing waves.
Here is some of what awaits you:
1. Spectacular surfing beaches and coves
You cannot avoid the beaches – they stretch from the city center area of Peniche to the next district of Baleal. As this is ocean water (you are staring into the Atlantic Ocean), it can be quite chilly, something that would be refreshing on a warm summer day. It is a known surf town – meaning that the ocean can be rough at times.
2. Majestic landscape
The landscape in Peniche is quite unique and will leave you in awe. When the sea is rough, you will experience extreme waves hit the coastline rocks, really emphasizing the true force of nature.
3. Cute buildings
In the city center and in the surroundings, there are many cute and romantic buildings. Below is a hotel and a local house.
4. Berlengas Island
Located off the coast of Peniche, you can take a boat trip to Berlengas Island. The island is inhabited by numerous of birds (some friendlier than others) and provide amazing views of itself and the surroundings.
5. Fort of Peniche
In the center of Peniche you will find its famous fort. While I only managed to get a glimpse of it from the outside, it is recommendable to make a visit inside. The fort has had significant importance in the protection of Portugal.
6. Great seafood
Peniche is a fishing town that is especially famous for sardines. If you are lucky you arrive in sardine season and will be in for some delicious and reasonably priced treats. If you are not there in sardine season, fear not. Fresh seafood is always on the menu.
If you enjoy fresh seafood, bike trips along the beach, cozy city centers, spectacular forces of nature, beautiful landscape and wind sports – Peniche is definitely a place you will enjoy!
