As with most gems in Salerno, they are hidden. Just like this place. You would not expect to come across a tiny little establishment like this, but then suddenly it is right in front of you in a narrow little alleyway. And the “gluten free” sign is more than visible. Here you can order a variety of local sweet treats, as well as pancakes and crepe.
Details of Establishment:
Name: Gelateria Bizarre
Type: Restaurant
Location: Via Mercanti, 16, 84121 Salerno, Italy
Tips: The place is tiny with only two seats and no tables, so expect to do take-away.
Gluten free or not gluten free observations:
Item(s) ordered: Gluten free crepe with white chocolate
GF observation: There is no menu to flip through, but a sign on the door tells you what gluten free options you have (which is basically everything in the gluten free version). The staff speak English well and will also inform you of all your options. When my crepe was made, it was done at the back and not on the heating plates for regular gluten dishes.
Celiac safety: This is not a 100% gluten free establishment. However, it should be noted that it has a sticker from the Celiac Association on the door and is listed on their website as a Celiac friendly establishment. They have received training and is monitored by the Italian Celiac Association.
Overall comment: It is a tiny place but with surprisingly many gluten free options. It is a bummer that you cannot sit down, especially eating crepe is difficult on the go, but what I ate was quite good. A bit pricey, but oh well.
