Opan is a bakery with gluten products, and I do not recommend going there to eat. The only reason I am mentioning it here, is because they do have gluten free bakery items in their designated freezer. Thus, if you are staying in Madeira and have access to a kitchen, you can stack up on your gluten free needs here and have something to enjoy for breakfast or lunch.
Details of Establishment:
Name: Opan
Type: Bakery
Location: Various locations all over Madeira
Tips: Look for the gluten free marked freezer, normally by the entrance.
Gluten free or not gluten free observations:
Item(s) ordered: Gluten free baguettes from the freezer (to go)
GF observation: While they do not really cater to people on a gluten free diet at this bakery chain, they do have something remarkable. At a large quantity of their bakeries, you will find a little freezer containing gluten free goodies. The contents varies, but for the most part is will be mini baguettes, larger baguettes, bread and muffins. The freezer is clearly marked with a gluten free sign, so you cannot miss it.
Celiac safety: Opan is a a bakery that does not cater to the gluten free diet, and thus all their fresh products contain gluten. Of course, you can at some bakeries order omelettes and such, but seeing how this is a bakery chain with flour all over the place, I would not risk it as a Celiac.
